LGBTQIA+ Affirming Therapy and Assessment

Affirming psychological support for LGBTQIA+ and gender diverse people

Affirming therapy provides space to explore identity, relationships, mental health, and life direction without needing to explain, defend, or minimise who you are.

LGBTQIA+ people often seek therapy for the same reasons as anyone else: anxiety, depression, trauma, relationship difficulties, grief, burnout, identity questions, work stress, family conflict, or major life transitions. However, these experiences can be shaped by minority stress, stigma, rejection, discrimination, concealment, safety concerns, and the cumulative impact of navigating systems that have not always felt affirming or safe.

At Sanctum Psychology, therapy is LGBTQIA+ affirming, trauma-informed, and grounded in an understanding of minority stress. Support is available for sexuality, gender identity, relationships, mental health, and gender-affirming care pathways.

Services may include:

  • LGBTQIA+ affirming therapy
  • Support with sexuality, gender identity, and self-understanding
  • Therapy for anxiety, depression, trauma, burnout, grief, and relationship difficulties
  • Support with family, partner, workplace, school, or social stress
  • Trans and gender diverse mental health support
  • WPATH-informed assessment for gender-affirming care
  • Support for neurodivergent LGBTQIA+ clients
  • Relationship and attachment-focused therapy
  • Support with minority stress, shame, masking, rejection, and identity-related trauma

Our approach

Therapy is respectful, collaborative, and affirming. The focus is not on pathologising identity, but on understanding the person in context, including the impact of minority stress, trauma, relationships, family systems, culture, neurodivergence, and life experience.

Gender-affirming assessment is approached with care, dignity, and clinical rigour, consistent with contemporary gender-affirming practice and WPATH Standards of Care. Where assessment letters are required, the process aims to be respectful, transparent, and purposeful, while still meeting the clinical and documentation requirements of the relevant medical pathway.

Clients can expect a therapist who is clinically experienced, personally attuned to LGBTQIA+ communities, and able to work with both the emotional depth and practical realities of identity, relationships, and mental health.

The goal is to provide a space that feels safe, intelligent, direct when needed, and genuinely affirming.
